Tree tomography: see inside the tree with sensor technology

Trees can look perfectly healthy on the outside while concealing invisible dangers within, such as internal rot, cavities or fungal infections. To accurately determine the stability and safety of a tree - without causing any damage - we use innovative tree tomography with sensors.

The principle is similar to a CT scan in a hospital, but specially developed for trees (often called acoustic tomography or Picus tomography).

Why choose tree tomography?

Placing sensors

Placing sensors

We place a series of highly sensitive sensors around the trunk. These sensors cause absolutely no damage to the bark or the tree. 100% non-destructive: there is no need to drill or saw into the tree to inspect the interior. The tree does not suffer in any way.
Sending sound waves

Sending sound waves

By tapping the sensors gently, we send sound waves through the wood. Healthy, dense wood conducts sound faster than hollow or rotten wood. We can see exactly how thick the remaining healthy wall is - determining whether a valued or heritage tree can safely remain standing, or whether intervention is needed.
Digital analysis

Digital analysis

The computer instantly translates the travel speed of the signals into a detailed, colourful 2D or 3D image (a tomogram) of the internal cross-section of the trunk.
