Trees and storm damage
Fungi
When fungi appear on the trunk, just above the roots, it can be a sign of internal decay. However, not every fungus is dangerous - some species live alongside trees in a beneficial relationship. It takes an expert to assess whether the fungi pose a real threat to the tree and whether it needs to be removed.
Dead wood
Dead wood is completely normal in a tree. Branches have a limited lifespan and are shed from time to time - no reason for panic. What does matter is where the dead wood is located: dead wood outside the crown, and especially leafless branches at the top of the tree, can indicate the decline of the tree.
Ivy
It is a misconception that ivy kills a tree. Ivy is not a parasite - it simply attaches itself to the bark, but its adhesive roots cannot penetrate it. It can become a problem, however, if the ivy grows out of control: the added weight can then become too great for the tree to bear.
